Gold stop-loss for prop firm challenges: daily loss limit vs gold's real noise
A typical FTMO-style $100,000 challenge allows a 5% daily loss: $5,000. Risk 2% per trade and the third full stop of the day breaks it. On gold that comes faster than it sounds: right now one average true range on the 1-hour chart is $8.14, and since Jun 2024 a stop that close to entry was hit within 24 hours 73% of the time — whichever way the trade was pointing.
Put in your account, limit, risk and stop. The calculator gives the size, how many stops the day can take, and how often a stop that far was hit — measured, not predicted.

Why stops inside the noise get hit
Gold moves back and forth inside every hour. A stop placed inside that ordinary range is reached by the noise itself, whether or not the trade idea was right — which is why a tight gold stop "always gets hit". On a challenge the cost doubles: each stop-out also uses part of a daily limit that does not come back until the next day.
| Stop distance | Size for $1,000 risk* | Hit within 4 h | Hit within 24 h |
|---|---|---|---|
| $4.07 (0.5 ATR) | 2.45 lots | 66% | 86% |
| $8.14 (1 ATR) | 1.22 lots | 40% | 73% |
| $12.21 (1.5 ATR) | 0.81 lots | 23% | 60% |
| $16.28 (2 ATR) | 0.61 lots | 13% | 50% |
| $24.42 (3 ATR) | 0.40 lots | 5% | 33% |
Every hourly close since Jun 2024 treated as an entry, long and short, and checked for whether a stop at that distance was touched within the next 4 or 24 hours (13,774 hourly bars). *Lots assume 100 oz per lot, rounded down to a 0.01-lot step. Chart prices from COMEX gold futures moved to the spot price your broker quotes; your broker's spread makes a stop act slightly closer.
- About $16.28 (2.0 ATR) is where a gold stop was hit within a day half the time; about $24.42 (3.0 ATR), a third of the time.
- Gold typically covers about 4.8 ATR (~$38.99) from high to low in 24 hours.
- The same dollar risk on a wider stop means a smaller position, not a bigger loss. A wider stop is not automatically better: it is hit less often, and the size has to shrink with it.
How to read stop clusters on the gold chart
The gold terminal shades the price zones where the model expects retail stop-losses to crowd: just beyond recent swing highs and lows and at distances most traders use, built from price and volatility alone — not from broker order data. Read it as a map of whose stops you sit beside: a stop a few dollars past an obvious swing low shares its zone with many others.
It does not say where gold will go, or that a crowded zone is more likely to be reached. In our own test across about 100,000 historical levels, the modeled stop bands were reached 47.4% of the time against 48.1% for a placebo level the same distance away (method and figures). Distance from entry and the hour you enter set the odds of a stop being hit; the map shows where the crowd is.
A checklist for challenge days on gold
- Stops the day can take. Daily limit ÷ risk per trade = full stops before the limit. At 5% and 1% that is five; at 5% and 2%, two — the third breaks it.
- Major US data. On days with US jobs (NFP, usually the first Friday), CPI or a Fed decision, gold's day is usually wider than on a quiet day. Some firms restrict trading around high-impact news; the rule is in the firm's terms.
- Session opens. Entered around 11:00, 12:00, 13:00 London time, a stop one ATR away was hit within 4 hours about 56% / 59% / 61% of the time; around 18:00, 19:00, 20:00, about 23% / 23% / 22%. Single-hour figures are approximate (on later data an hour moved by 5-20 points); the busy-versus-calm pattern held.
- Rollover. Around 22:00 UTC (5 pm New York) spreads widen for a few minutes. A close stop can be hit on a wick the chart never showed.
- How the limit is counted. Firms differ: balance or equity, whether open losses count, and when the day resets (often midnight in the firm's time zone).
- Weekends. Gold can open on Monday beyond Friday's close, past a stop. Some challenges do not allow holding over the weekend.
Questions prop traders ask
How many lots can I trade on a $100k challenge with a 5% daily limit?
It depends on the stop, not on the limit. Lots = money at risk ÷ (stop distance in dollars × 100 oz). Risking 1% ($1,000) with a $10 stop is 1 lot; with a $20 stop, 0.5 lots. The limit decides how many of those losses the day can take — five at 1%.
Is a $5 stop on gold too tight?
Measured against gold's noise, a $5 stop is 0.61 hourly ATR right now. Stops that close were hit within 24 hours 83% of the time since Jun 2024. Whether that suits a strategy is the trader's call; the number says how often noise alone reaches it.
Does the daily loss limit count open losses?
At many firms it does: the limit is measured on equity, so a floating loss counts before the trade is closed, and the day starts from the balance or equity at the reset time. Others use closed balance only. The firm's rules page has the exact definition.
Do stop clusters tell me where gold will turn?
No. Price reached the modeled bands no more often than a placebo level the same distance away (47.4% vs 48.1%). They show where stops are modeled to crowd — whose stops yours sits beside — not a direction, and not a higher or lower chance of your stop being hit.
